Richfield Plumbing & Heating was established on April 1st, 1979 by Vern and Linda Shoemaker. This was no April fools joke, but actually a well thought out lifelong plan that would change their lives forever. It all started when Vern started plumbing and working with sheet metal in 1966 in Stettler AB. Vern quickly became a leader in his field by being awarded the top marks in Alberta and running jobs as a second year(which he points out to all new apprentices). Vern almost became partners in that company but decided to move to Edmonton in 1971 for personal reasons. Between 1971 and 1979, Vern worked with two companies and became one of the top employees at both but decided to venture off and become an owner of his own company in 1979. Do you know why we are called Richfield? Many people think it is because it is Vern’s last name but actually it is an area in Millwoods where Vern and Linda lived for 10 years and ran the business out of their house/garage. Richfield moved out of that garage in 1983 and into a small warehouse condo near Parsons road and 29th avenue. In 1987, Vern and Linda built their new house in Millwoods and included a second garage where Richfield called home until 2010 when Richfield moved into their current location in the Strathcona business park.
The Old Era
Richfield began doing mostly commercial projects in the 80′s including many Millwoods community halls but started doing more residential projects near the end of the 80′s. In 1987, when Vern built his house, he tried something new, something that would define Richfield till this day; hydronic in-floor radiant heating! Hydronic in-floor heating was just beginning to come to the mainstream market and Vern wouldn’t feel comfortable installing a product in a clients home without being 100% sure of the entire process it entailed. Already having years of experience with boilers and baseboard heating, Vern started making the transition to infloor heating as his first project was such a success. After that, Richfield started getting more infloor heating jobs from builders and other plumbers. Without even knowing it at the time, Richfield was beginning to get recognized as a leader in the industry and was the first or one of the first to build the boiler systems(we call them heating boards) in the shop and transfer it to site and make the final connections after.
The New Era
Richfield continued being a success into the next century and stayed small and true to keep quality maintained. The main difference now was Vern and Linda’s son decided to come aboard and help out the family business. In 1995, Dan first started helping his Dad out on the jobs but mostly stuck to infloor heating and light duty jobs. It wasn’t until 2003 when Dan finished high school and decided to join Richfield full time and never looked back. Dan eventually became an official part owner at the end of 2010 and combined the old true methods of Vern with Dan’s computer skills and new way of thinking to help propel Richfield into a strong competitive company for years to come. Richfield continues to build new custom homes, renovations, infloor heating and gas fitting but have also done more commercial projects as well. Jared Pickles and Andrew Bailey have joined Richfield in the last few years and it looks like they will have a strong future in the plumbing/gas/heating trade to help Richfield grow on their previous accomplishments and reputation!
